The Forest Trailhead at Woodland Park Zoo is a two-story, 12,000-square-foot pavilion designed to house habitats for tree kangaroos, red pandas, and kea parrots, along with smaller exhibits for fish, amphibians and reptiles. Its design prioritizes a seamless connection between nature and architecture, creating an immersive, welcoming space for animals and visitors alike. Key features include an interior ramp winding to the second floor for elevated animal viewing and an exterior ramp that weaves through exhibits, offering unique perspectives while blending with the natural surroundings.
A highlight of the pavilion is its use of Mass Plywood Panels (MPP), selected for their aesthetic appeal and environmental benefits. The exposed wood finish creates a warm, natural ambiance that complements the surrounding habitats, while MPP’s efficient production process minimizes waste, aligning with the zoo’s sustainability goals. This innovative wood product demonstrates how modern materials can meet both structural and ecological needs, enhancing the project’s environmental stewardship.
Through its thoughtful design and material choices, the pavilion fosters a sense of harmony between humans, animals, and the environment. The use of MPP elevates the architectural experience, softening the space with the beauty of wood while promoting sustainability. This project stands as a testament to the possibilities of innovative wood construction in creating spaces that prioritize well-being and connection with nature.
