In 2017, the UBC Brock Commons – Tallwood House was completed, a LEED Gold certified 18 storey student residence building with the capacity to house approx. 400 students. At the time of completion, it was the tallest Mass Timber Tower in the world, achieved by using a hybrid concrete & mass timber design. A key highlight was the remarkable speed the construction of the Mass Timber structural elements and prefabricated façade, taking under 70 days to complete!
The concept of the UBC Brock Commons – Tallwood House was primarily focused on sustainable development, storing the equivalent of 1,753 metric tons of CO2! As a result, the building was well recognized and won the; Canadian Wood Council – 2018 Wood Innovation Award & 2018 Engineer Award, BC Public Service – 2018 Premier’s Award, Canadian Green Building Council – 2018 Commercial/Industrial (Small) Award, and many more!
