In a groundbreaking achievement, the APEX beam hangers have successfully passed rigorous testing to achieve a 2-hr fire resistance rating, with a beam-to-column gap of 1/16 in. (1.6 mm) and measured with gaps up to 1/8 in. (3 mm), reflecting typical construction tolerances. The test set up had wood cover of 3.9 in. (98 mm) at the bottom and 3 in. (76 mm) on the sides, while being fully loaded. This reduces the cross-section dimensions required by the CSA O86:24 to achieve a 2-hr FRR , representing a huge cost-saving on the overall mass timber package.
All of this without a fire-resistant joint, meaning no fire sealant, intumescent tape, or fire caulking, and tested in accordance with CAN/ULC-S101 & ASTM E119, with and without reinforcing screws.
For architects and engineers, this means the freedom to design with high-performance, fire-rated connections using smaller cross-sections for a more cost-competitive package. For contractors, it means a faster, simpler, and more efficient installation
