Competition is an integral driving force in the world of professional sports. The Spurs, San Antonio’s NBA team, have brought that competitive spirit into the development of their facilities by investing in a new mass timber training center that aims to keep them on the cutting edge of both athletic performance and sustainable development. The Victory Capital Performance Center is, as of August 2023, the largest mass timber training facility in US professional sports as well as the largest mass timber structure in Texas. Its most impressive structural component is the set of twenty 130-feet long, 6.5-feet tall Glulam beams that span over the all-important basketball courts.

The project’s vision is centered around the “advancement of human performance” through training and research while making it accessible to the wider community. In addition to practice courts, the building features environmental training rooms, hydrotherapy pools, a sensory deprivation tank, a team dining room, and a performance kitchen. The facility is a core part of a larger 45-acre development, The Rock at La Cantera, which will also include a human performance research center, a 22-acre park, a public outdoor event plaza, and spaces for medical, hospitality, and commercial use.

With this achievement in the realm of professional sports facilities, mass timber continues to prove itself as a choice material for competitive, forward-thinking developers.
