Ferme Berni stands as a groundbreaking achievement in agricultural construction, becoming Quebec’s first large-scale mass timber dairy barn. Spanning nearly 7,500 square meters, the barn was designed to optimize both efficiency and animal welfare while prioritizing sustainability. The choice of mass timber was not only an aesthetic decision but a strategic one—reducing the building’s carbon footprint by 45% compared to traditional steel and concrete structures. The use of glue-laminated (glulam) timber helped lower emissions by over 412,000 kg CO2-equivalent, positioning the barn as a benchmark for sustainable agricultural design.

A key aspect of the project’s success was the implementation of MTC Solutions screws, chosen for their speed of installation and on-site adaptability. These fasteners enabled quick adjustments during construction, significantly reducing installation time and optimizing the transition from fabrication to on-site assembly. The superstructure, composed of glulam and steel columns, was erected in just 2.5 months—a testament to the efficiency of the connection systems. The self-supporting rigid frame eliminated the need for internal bracing, maximizing open space for equipment and livestock movement.

The barn’s design incorporates several unique features to enhance functionality and longevity. A continuous skylight spans the entire length of the building, maximizing natural light, while a custom roll-up wall system improves ventilation—features rarely seen in traditional dairy barns. Structural elements were strategically angled to protect against environmental exposure, and the roof was specifically designed to prevent bird perches, improving hygiene and maintenance. Despite construction challenges, such as adapting to an unforeseen roofing sequence, the project team successfully navigated obstacles through strategic planning and material selection.

The completed structure has been widely recognized for its innovation and impact on the local community. The client takes pride in having built the largest wooden farm structure in Quebec using locally sourced materials. Ferme Berni is more than just a barn—it represents a shift towards sustainable, high-performance agricultural buildings that blend cutting-edge engineering with environmental responsibility.
