Design for Reinforcement of Perpendicular to Grain Connection

The inherent weakness of wood in tension perpendicular to grain often yields issues in timber connections. In fact, NDS 2012 design provisions state that designs that induce tension stresses perpendicular to grain shall be avoided whenever possible. In practice however it seems not possible to entirely avoid connections which introduce tension perpendicular to grain. In these cases reinforcement is required. Full thread self-tapping reinforcing screws are among the most efficient reinforcing methods perpendicular to grain.
