Slender, dowel type fasteners loaded laterally are both ductile and suitable for energy dissipation. Designated yielding joints will target the formation of one or two plastic hinges in the fastener (with the latter providing the greatest relative ductility and energy dissipation). Inclined screws are primarily loaded axially, and failure modes at Fmax tend to be characterized by axial effects with minimal screw bending. Inclined screw joints, therefore, are considered non-dissipative, even when designed for reverse loading with symmetrical screw crosses.
